Savills Chase General Info
Leopardstown’s Christmas Festival meeting is among the biggest in Ireland and during it we will see the 33rd running of the Savills Chase, a huge Grade 1 event featuring 17 fences over three miles.
The Savills Chase 2019 will take place on Saturday December 28th and promises to be a major prep once again for the Gold Cup at Cheltenham, though in terms of its history many will know the event as the Ericsson Chase or the Lexus Chase given that the race is always named after a sponsor.
Both Best Mate (2003) and Denman (2007) won this race before going onto to Cheltenham Gold Cup glory so this race, while hugely important in its own right, is a very important one for punters to watch with a view to the future.
Savills Chase Stats & Trends
A quick look at the above list of winners tells you that, with six winners or placed horses in the Gold Cup thereafter, it clearly takes a top-class chaser to win this event so stick with the known quality in the field.
Backing that up is the fact that 14 of 19 winners have been aged 7+, in fact that record was 14 of 17 winners (82%) until 2016. Only five favourites have won in this time, with the average SP of the winner being 9/2 despite a few odds-on jollies going in.
So, value can often be grabbed in this race and yet it takes proven quality. So, previous Grade 1 winners aged seven or older with solid recent form who are going off at decent prices should be taken very seriously indeed.
Savills Chase Betting
While all of the major firms will probably be offering Non-Runner No Bet and Best Odds Guaranteed deals on the Savills Chase 2019, as well as other major races at Leopardstown, the biggest Irish firms such as Paddy Power as well as newer kids on the block such as Unibet could offer extra bonuses, so do be on the lookout for those.
Grabbing the best value for your Savills Chase runners is imperative so check out these firms and also shop around for the best prices before post time on the 28th December.

Past Savills Chase Winners
The 2018 Savills Chase looked the ideal time for someone else to step into the limelight and stop Willie Mullins dominating all the big races; Noel Meade training the 9/4 favourite Road To Respect while Henry De Bromhead was responsible for second-favourite Monalee at 11/2.
Of Willie Mullins’ horses Ruby Walsh had chosen to ride Bellshill, but he was no shorter in the market (8/1) than stable companion Kemboy who was on the upgrade and reached a career peak when stretching a long-held lead between the final two fences under David Mullins to ultimately score by 7½ lengths, bringing home a €103,000 first prize cheque.
Here are all winners of the race since 2010, along with how well all of the successful Savills Chase runners have done at the subsequent Cheltenham Festival.
