Long Walk Hurdle General Info
The Long Walk Hurdle, run at Ascot since 1965, will take place this year on Saturday December 21st and will be known as the Marsh Hurdle Race.
Staged over three miles and half a furlong, the Long Walk is a key prep for the Stayers’ Hurdle at Cheltenham but is a Grade 1 event in its own right. Worth £100,000 this year, the Long Walk Hurdle 2019 should feature the very top staying hurdlers in the country, something we’ve become accustomed to as the race has been won by some of the best in the business.
Big Buck’s, Thistlecrack and Paisley Park are just a few of the runners to have taken this before going onto success at the Festival, so this is without doubt an important race for horsemen and punters alike.
Long Walk Hurdle Stats & Trends
We could be set for a real guessing game in the Long Walk Hurdle 2019, given that in terms of their odds our post-millennium winners have ranged from long odds-on right up to 14/1.
Ten favourites have won the race in that timeframe, however this usually occurs when superstars such as Big Buck’s or Baracouda have been on the scene and so with no such machine in the division right now, it could be a case of looking for a decent price when Long Walk Hurdle betting opens up soon.
Taking out the multiple winners also gives us an idea of the perfect age; the twelve unique champions having all been aged between 5-8 with the exception of one, in fact most are aged 5-7 which should help narrow things down a little more.
Successful trainers in this race have tended to be so because of multiple returning champions, so don’t pay too much attention to the handlers other than looking out for who is in great form when the race comes around.
Long Walk Hurdle Betting
Rest assured that, with this race being one of the most important on the National Hunt schedule, we should have plenty of Long Walk Hurdle offers being thrown at us by bookmakers nearer race time.
The usual Best Odds Guaranteed and Non-Runner No Bet deals will be in force when prices are published, but keep an eye out simply for the best value. Currently SkyBet are top-priced on more Stayers’ Hurdle candidates than anyone else, so presumably their Long Walk Hurdle betting market will be strong.
William Hill also seem to be fairly generous with runners in this division, something regular punters are more appreciative of than any one-off bonus deals offered up so that’s what we like to see.

Past Long Walk Hurdle Winners
Heading into the 2018 renewal of the Long Walk, Paisley Park had been just steadily climbing the staying hurdle ranks after handicap wins at Aintree and Haydock, so despite his burgeoning reputation he came into the event as an 8/1 shot behind 7/2 favourite Call Me Lord and much-fancied runners Unowhatimeanharry, Sam Spinner and Agrapart.
Those last-named three managed to actually fill the final three placings, while the jolly could do no better than seventh as the improving Paisley Park surged on to lead just after the final flight to score by a couple of lengths from West Approach.
There was no fluke about that win considering what Emma Lavelle’s gelding went on to do at Cheltenham, and here are all the other winners of this race since the turn of the millennium alongside their own subsequent Festival achievements.
