2020 Winner: Burning Victory

The JCB Triumph Hurdle is the premier Grade 1 race for National Hunt juveniles and restricted to horses aged four. Established in 1939, the race was initially held at Hurst Park until the Surrey track’s closure in 1962. Following a three-year hiatus, the Triumph returned at Cheltenham in 1965 first at the April Meeting.

This race then moved to the Festival in 1968 where it has been run ever since. Besides a number of precocious winners, equine greats including Persian War, Kribensis, Commanche Court, Katchit and Tiger Roll all tasted victory in the Triumph before going onto even greater things. It is thus a launchpad for careers, but has proved tricky for punters to find the winner on a number of occasions throughout its history. You can see all the latest JCB Triumph Hurdle offers, entries and betting tips right here.

Antepost Runners & Favourites

All major online bookmakers have made their antepost markets for the Triumph Hurdle available and this allows punters to get in early and back their preferred runner. With antepost betting, the sooner you get your cash down the better the odds on your chosen horse will be. Act now to get a much better quote than the one given to those leaving their bets until the week of the race or even the day of the contest.

Shrewd backers love antepost betting as it gives them the chance to really profit from their knowledge and deliver a body blow to the bookies. At this early stage there’s also a degree of uncertainty amongst the trading teams of different firms and that’s music to the ears of value hunters. If, for example, most firms are 10/1 on a horse winning a big race at the Cheltenham Festival but you shop around, do your homework and find a site offering 14/1, that rates as a great bet. You can then get your cash down confident in the fact you have the value working in your favour and that allows you to enjoy the contest, whatever the result. Horse racing betting isn’t just about picking the winner, it’s has as much to do with getting it at the right price.

Antepost betting, like all forms of gambling, comes with risks, however, so don’t allow yourself to get carried away by the eye-catching odds. When betting before the final field has been declared you run the risk of your horse not entering the race you backed it to win. For example, it could be pushed into another contest at the festival or could even bypass Prestbury Park entirely. If that were the case you would lose your stake without ever getting a run for your money.

Let’s look at some of the early favourites in the antepost betting and pick out which bookmakers rate as the most generous in the betting ring.

Zanahiyr (11/4)

Sitting at the head of the JCB Triumph Hurdle ante post betting and Gordon Elliott’s very strong crop of juveniles is Zanahiyr. Unbeaten in three starts since switching from the Flat, the Nathaniel gelding progressed through the grades. Zanahiyr has won easily at Fairyhouse and Leopardstown. Elliott has since given him a winter break, so he comes to Cheltenham fresh. Stable jockey Jack Kennedy has never had to get serious on him. In his absence, stable companion Quilixios won the Spring Juvenile Hurdle at the Dublin Racing Festival, but Zanahiyr clearly looks like the yard’s first string.

Zanahiyr

Adagio (10/1)

The best of the British in the JCB Triumph Hurdle 2021 is Finale Juvenile winner Adagio. A French import to the David Pipe stable, the Wiener Walzer gelding has won three of his four starts since joining the yard. Only Duffle Coat has handed him a defeat over hurdles. Prior to Grade 1 success at Chepstow, Adagio got more vital course experience by winning one of the Triumph Hurdle trials at Cheltenham. The way he readily beat previous wide-margin victor Nassalam suggests that he has improving with every run. Adagio can certainly give the Irish juveniles plenty to think about here.

Duffle Coat (16/1)

Given that Duffle Coat has beaten Adagio in the Prestbury Juvenile Hurdle over the Triumph course and distance, it doesn’t make sense that he is available at a bigger price. Another unbeaten inmate of Elliott’s stable, he has one advantage over Zanahiyr and Quilixios in that bettors know he travels over to the UK well. Duffle Coat took both the Wensleydale Juvenile at Wetherby and Prestbury by staying on late. Given the pace at which the Triumph will be run, it may play right into his hands tactically. There is big each-way value in siding with Duffle Coat at the Festival.

Race Stats & Trends

Many backers looking to get their cash down on the winner of the JCB Triumph Hurdle enjoy flicking through the trends, looking for any hints or clues from recent years that may throw up the winner of the 2021 renewal. Below you will find details on the leading jockey in this race as well as the trainer that has provided more champions than any other.

  • Leading jockey in the overall JCB Triumph Hurdle stats is Barry Geraghty who has been responsible for no less than five winners over the years. He landed his first victory when riding Spectroscope to the winner’s enclosure in 2003 and followed that up with a second on Zaynar in 2009. Soldatino did the business for Geraghty in 2010 and he also had Peace And Co in 2015 and, most recently, Ivanovich Gorbatov in 2016.
  • Leading trainer comes in the form of Nicky Henderson who has given us a total of seven previous champions so far. It is unlikely that mark will be equalled or bettered by a rival trainer any time soon. Henderson enjoyed his first Triumph Hurdle win in 1985 with First Bout and added Alone Success in 1987. It took until 1999 and Katarino to complete the hattrick in this race. He also trained Zaynar in 2009, Soldatino 2010, Peace And Co 2015 and then Pentland Hills last year.

What Happened in 2019?

The 2019 JCB Triumph Hurdle was won by Penland Hills who was ridden by Nico de Boinville and trained by Nicky Henderson. It was the second horse in five years to be trained by Nicky Henderson and win the race, the fourth in the last 11 renewals.

Pentland Hills caused a shock result that day when being sent off a 20/1 no hoper but rallying to beat Coeur Sublime by three lengths which was an astonishing feat. The second was also a 20/1 shot that day and there weren’t too many on the forecast, that’s for sure. Gardens of Babylon was back in third to complete the major places at 9/1.
