Stable Plate Handicap Chase 2021 Preview & Tips
Preview By Frank Monkhouse
Former professional boxer who is now a content writer specialising in sports and betting. Has worked for some of the biggest names in the industry, including Coral and Betfair covering all manner of sports, from boxing and football to horse racing. A student of the formbook, he loved stats, trends, numbers and how they can guide punters towards a winner.
The Stable Plate carries Grade 3 status, is run over 2 miles, 4½ furlongs and features seventeen fences on the New Course. This year’s renewal will be worth at least £110,000.
This is a race that has been on the schedule since 1951 and was originally named after amateur jockey and Festival winner the 2nd Baron Mildmay of Flete, and over the years has been won by Blowing Wind and Mister McGoldrick.
A high-value and competitive handicap chase, the Stable Plate is an important race not just for trainers and jockeys, but also for Cheltenham punters as well who wear picking the winner of events like this as a badge of honour.
Antepost Key Runners & Favourites
Entries aren’t yet open for the Brown Advisory Plate 2021, and given that this is a handicap event at the most popular distance the amount of horses eligible and likely to take entries is massive at this early stage.
As soon as an ante post betting market opens up on the race, we’ll have some great value advance information on key runners to help you attempt to get ahead of the game and perhaps have a couple of wise big-priced bets in your back pocket for the Cheltenham Festival.
Stable Plate Offers
The online betting market, for now at least, just keeps getting more and more competitive and so it will be hugely interesting to see what sort of deals are being delved out come March as firms fall over each other to grab our business ahead of the biggest betting week of the year.

Stable Plate Stats & Trends
One of the three most successful trainers in this race, each with four wins, is still going strong so do look out for anything that Nicky Henderson chooses to run in the Plate, remember in fact that Henderson also had the well-backed runner-up in this race last year.
It’s no surprise to see that, in terms of the most successful jockey, this title is still held by Fred Winter who won three times in the 50’s as this sort of contest is always one likely to be shared out among many riders given its competitive nature.
We can see some patterns emerging in a few other areas though, making them noteworthy when attempting to choose your Stable Plate bets.
This Season’s Form
In terms of a ten-year trend we see a real mixed bag here. While in the recent past some horses had no real form to speak of that season and yet went off at shorter prices due perhaps to being ‘laid out’ for the race, we’ve seen a much more modern trend of Plate contenders needing to be in sparkling form over recent seasons.
In the last four years, winners of this race have been placed at least twice that season and it seems this will be an important factor for those sending out Brown Advisory Plate tips once again.
Age
9 of the last 10 winners (90%) were aged 6-9, and while that doesn’t narrow things down for us very much it seems that is the sweet spot for handicap chasers generally so we must stick with that.
Looking at it in a slightly different way though; 50% of winners were aged 8+ and 40% aged 9+ therefore it could be argued that experience is crucial in this event, so while not discounting those aged under nine, perhaps special consideration can be given to this age set.
Starting Price
Over the full ten years the pattern would suggest a horse could win this from anywhere in the market, and that is still broadly true given that this is a competitive and deep handicap.
5 of the last 6 (83%) winners have gone off at 16/1 and under however which goes hand in hand with them all being in good form heading into the race, while we can’t forget that essentially the first four horses in the betting last season at the off filled the first four places, so recently this has been a little easier to read by using the market as a guide.
Stable Plate Betting Guide
Races such as this are great for ante post betting so as soon as advanced Brown Advisory Plate betting opens up, we’ll attempt to grab some early value.
When the final declarations are known however on Tuesday March 16th, we’ll have each-way terms confirmed (likely to be four places, more given as offers by certain bookmakers) which will help us even more while by then we will also be able to back our selections using ‘best odds guaranteed’.

What Happened in 2019?
The 2019 Brown Advisory Plate Cheltenham runners were a typically competitive bunch, 22 of them going to post with Nicky Henderson’s Janika a hotly fancied 3/1 favourite.
Not far behind in the market was Nick Williams’ Siruh Du Lac at 9/2 with Dan Skelton’s Spiritofthegames next in at 6/1 and it was relatively unusual to see three such short-priced horses in a race of this nature, meaning either they were all in with a serious chance or they were very badly priced.
It turned out to be the former as they all filled the first three places, Siruh Du Lac coming out on top after a protracted battle up the hill which meant he eventually defeated Janika by ¾ of a length under Lizzie Kelly, Spiritofthegames coming home just 2¼ lengths further back in third.
One of two 10/1 shots, Eamon An Cnoic was fourth in what was an extraordinary finish that vindicated fully the fierce betting market.
