Marsh Novices’ Chase Tips

Chief British challenger Itchy Feet (4/1) has been very impressive in his two starts over fences this season and will be hugely popular in the betting ring come 1.20 on Thursday.

While he clearly has talent and perhaps more improvement to come over time, he did land the Scilly Isles Novices’ Chase last time and in a race of such significance it is often the case that even as novices these horses have to peak to be successful, so there is perhaps not as much to come from his yet as first thought.

Ahead of him on most boards at 7/2 is former top-class hurdler Samcro of Gordon Elliott’s yard.  When giving away weight at Fairyhouse it seems he may well have beaten Fakir D’oudairies were it not for a fall, so considering that horse went on to finish second in the Arkle on Tuesday his form is rock solid.

In saying that, he was himself comfortably beaten by former Champion Hurdle hero FAUGHEEN and it could be that we witness the very rare sight of a twelve-year-old taking this top novice chase event.

Faugheen has been completely reinvigorated over fences and has been pretty flawless to date.  Given the form lines of all involved, it seems silly that he is available at as big as 5/1 overnight for this race and should he once again be lit up by racing here, he’d be tough to beat.

There won’t be a louder cheer in the winner’s enclosure all week if Willie Mullins’ contender gets the job done, and we’re backing him to do so.

Marsh (JLT) Novices’ Chase 2021 Preview

Preview By Frank Monkhouse

Preview By Frank Monkhouse

Former professional boxer who is now a content writer specialising in sports and betting. Has worked for some of the biggest names in the industry, including Coral and Betfair covering all manner of sports, from boxing and football to horse racing. A student of the formbook, he loved stats, trends, numbers and how they can guide punters towards a winner.

It may not be the biggest race of the week, but it is no less important to those taking part, or indeed backers with their stake money down on the winner. Punters will find there’s no shortage of value in the JLT Novices Chase this year and the antepost betting suggests we should prepare for a competitive renewal.

Where does the smart money go on this race? Our in-depth preview details everything you need to know before placing a bet, from early betting favourites and past winners to race trends and a guide on how to bet on the outcome. Keep the latter close when preparing to put your stake money down on the JLT Novices Chase 2021 champion as it could help you beat the bookies and land a profit and don’t forget to use best betting deals for Cheltenham races that will definitely help get the job done!

Antepost Key Runners & Favourites

Traders at all major betting firms have priced up their early thoughts and produced antepost markets on the biggest races of the 2021 Cheltenham Festival. The JLT Novices Chase is no different and those looking to get in early and secure a better price about their predictions will find there’s plenty of value to be had, especially if you’re willing to work for it and seek out market best price.

Getting the best odds possible on your runner at the Cheltenham Festival is almost as important as picking the right horse. A winner is great but if you settle for 6/1 on a selection you could have backed at 10/1 it will have a massive impact in your overall profit margin when it comes to tallying up your returns at the end of the week.

Not only does this review explain how the current antepost betting lies, it also flags up the most generous bookmakers, those going above and beyond to offer their customers market best price. Remember, when betting antepost, if your pick doesn’t run in the race you backed it to win you lose your stake money. That’s the risk involved in playing your cards at this early stage, but the rewards are well worth taking aim at.

Samcro (7/1)

The money men have had their say on the 2021 JLT Novices Chase and have pinned Samcro to the head of their betting market. That rates as no real surprise to followers of the sport but the fact the jolly carries a 7/1 price tag when betting at Bet Victor shows just how open the race should be. Traders were forced into making a decision in order to keep up with the competition and offer an antepost market, but they don’t seem overly convinced in their stance.

Another interesting aspect of the current betting field is that Bet Victor offer Samcro as a 7/1 leader but many of their rivals prefer to keep the fav much closer, offering only 5/1 on the same outcome. That’s quite a difference and, if you fancy Samcro to win or not, the chance to back a 5/1 favourite at 7/1 shouldn’t be passed up too often. That’s sure to catch the attention of value hunters who make their profits by seizing on any indecision in the betting, reacting to any major differences in price.

This Irish bred seven-year-old gelding trained by Gordon Elliott certainly looks the part on paper and went into the season with career stats showing eight wins and two seconds from a dozen starts. He opened the campaign with victory at Down Royal in November when winning a beginners’ chase over 2m 3f with plenty to spare, proving himself too good for the field that day. A wonderful way to blow off the cobwebs and set the pace for what will be a big season. A worthy JLT betting favourite.

Reserve Tank (10/1)

Rated as the main danger to Samcro in the JLT Novices Chase, Reserve Tank is certainly good enough to serve up a challenge if entered into the race. He has been priced as a 10/1 second favourite but, again, there’s an obvious difference of opinion amongst the trading teams of major bookmakers. Betfair have him at double figures and if you fancy a bet on Reserve Tank, that’s exactly where you should back him. Others are happy to sit around the 7/1 mark, however.

Will he live up to expectations and run like a 7/1 shot on the day or perform more like the 10/1 suggested by Betfair? That remains to be seen but his record tells us Reserve Tank is a contender well worth a second look when putting together your bets on this race. He has won five of eight outings, placing on another two occasions. Followers playing to a £1 level stake already have a £32.05 profit in their account and will be delighted to reinvest some of that here.

The five-year-old is trained by Colin Tizzard and goes into the season on the back of a confidence boosting win around Wincanton in November. He claimed a Grade 2 novices chase that day over 2m 4f, beating a decent field by 3 ¾ lengths or more. The victor was sent off a 4/5 fav that day and certainly lived up to the pre-race hype. Genuine contender in the JLT race Cheltenham.

Black Op (12/1)

We begin to get into the bigger prices in the JLT Chase betting and traders believe Black Op has a chance of winning this race, but it would take a career best performance if he is to do so. If Black Op’s handlers do enter him into the 2021 JLT Novices Chase you’ll see his price slashed across the board but, at present, while things remain undecided, there’s a generous 12/1 to be had when betting at Betfair. Be careful who you trust with your stake money, however, as there’s plenty of 10/1 out there designed to trip you up. Betfair are the go-to bookie for Black Op backers at the time of writing.

This eight-year-old gelding has run 13 times to date, winning four, finishing as runner up twice and taking home the bronze medal on three occasions. That proves his talent and tells us he will feature amongst the main finishers if he is asked to go and win the JLT in March. We expect a busy season for this runner, so keep your eyes on his form and if he continues to improve between now and the festival, you’ll know he’s worth keeping on the right side of.

Black Op got the season off to a flyer and gave backers a taste of things to come when winning at Stratford at the end of October. He was sent off as a 5/2 shot that day and crossed the line unchallenged with Mr Antolini in second unable to land a glove on him. Bigger and better things will come for this prospect, but he certainly didn’t do his reputation any harm that day.

Laurina (14/1)

William Hill have Laurina at 14/1 when going to publish and that’s worth a mention as many of their rivals agree that it should be closer to 12/1. Not the big difference in opinion we see with some of the other market leaders but there’s plenty of room to get your share of the value. It is only value if she wins, of course, but there’s every reason to suggest this challenger will go close.

This French bred mare goes into the season with plenty of promise and handlers hope this is the year she shows exactly what she is capable of. The six-year-old is trained by Willie Mullins and that partnership will ensure she’s popular with casual backers if risked in the JLT in March. She has won six of seven races so far and the thinking is there’s plenty more to come from this one. She has followers excited and it’ll be interesting to see which road she takes towards Cheltenham. A mare worth following closely in the run up to the festival to check on her progress.

Laurina has failed to win only one race so far but it did come last time out when ending fourth at Cheltenham last year in the Grade 1 Champion Hurdle. That was a leap up in class from what she had been used to previously and she got nowhere near Espoir D’Allen who ran out a comfortable winner. Laurina made a mistake when second that day, however, and the chances are that knocked her off her stride and affected the result. We’ll never know but there will be more than a few happy to give this talented and brave mare the benefit of the doubt if she’s entered into the JLT Novices Chase.

Race Stats & Trends

Many backers like to keep the race stats and trends close when betting at the Cheltenham Festival. There’s more work involved here than simply picking the favourite or following JLT Chase tips, of course, but backers are often surprised by how often the trends throw up a nice price winner.

There are lots of things to take into consideration when approaching the race from a tactical angle. Age of winner, for example, could be important. As is successful horses who have claimed the prize on more than one occasion, top jockeys and leading trainers. The more you study the more likely you’ll uncover an avenue worth following.

Below you’ll find a selection of trends and stats concerning the JLT Novices Chase but remember, this isn’t the oldest of races, so the stats are affected by that.

  • The leading jockey – the most successful rider ever to compete in the JLT Novices Chase is Ruby Walsh and followers of the sport won’t be blown away by that fact. He is responsible for three previous champions – Vautour in 2015, Black Hercules a year later and Yorkhil, the 2017 champion. Chances are he will on more before retiring.
  • Leading trainer – there really is no contest here and the stats show us we should pay special attention to runners from the Willie Mullins yard. He is always popular at the festival and that’s because the great of horse racing has become a regular in the winner’s enclosure, both in this race and many others at Cheltenham. He has given us four previous JLT Chase winners and holds a strong hand again this year. His winners to date have been Sir Des Champs in 2012, Vautour 2015, Black Hercules 2016 and with Yorkhill in 2017. If you pair a Mullins horse with Walsh in the JLT, chances are you won’t go far wrong.
  • Age – another important stat and another strong trend in the winner’s list. A seven-year-old has won this race in three of the last four years. To add weight to that stat, a 7YO has won six of the nine runnings of the JLT Novices Chase to date.

What Happened in 2019?

Those thinking back to the JLT Chase 2019 will recall the race was won by Defi Du Seuil for jockey Barry Geraghty and trainer Philip Hobbs. The six-year-old did the business and delighted backers who were on at an SP of 3/1. Those who acted early and backed Defi Du Seuil in the antepost betting market enjoyed a much bigger price, of course.

The champion lead home a chasing pack headed by Lostintranslation who was 2 ¼ lengths off the pace that day and the form of the runner up means we should pay very close attention to that result. He was given a patient ride by Garaghty, held up in mid division before being produced and pushed for home three out.

He hit the front on the flat and it became obvious quite quickly there was going to be no stopping Defi Du Seuil. A worthy winner of that race and one of the most convincing JLT champions we’ve seen in recent years. 9/1 shot Mengli Khan was back in third, a further seven lengths off the pace.
