Cheltenham Trials Day 2019

The 2019 Cheltenham Trials Day takes place on Saturday 26th January at Cheltenham Racecourse, with the first race getting underway at 12:40pm. Seven top class races make up the famous meeting, with many having marked the Cotswold Chase as the standout event from this years card. With many big name runners and riders taking part come the end of January, anticipation is already high surrounding one of the biggest dates in the horse racing calendar.

Cheltenham Trials Day Races

Let’s now take a closer look at all seven of the races that help to make up the Cheltenham Trials Day, starting with the JCB Triumph Hurdle.

JCB Triumph Hurdle Trial (12:40)

Kicking things off is the JCB Triumph Hurdle Trial, with Nicky Henderson’s Apple’s Shakira having come out on top in 2018. Many juvenline’s will be using the race as a means of stepping up preparations for the Cheltenham Festival, with the Grade 2 contest being run over 2 miles and 1 furlong over the new course.

Katchit famously won on both Trials Day and at the main event back in 2007, with many of the runners and riders undoubtedly looking to follow in his footsteps. The opening race of the day gets underway at 12:40pm.

Timeform Novices Handicap Chase (13:15)

The second race of the day comes in the form of the Novices Handicap Chase, which gets underway at 13:15pm. Run over a distance of 2 miles and 5 furlongs, many trainers will be looking on to see if their prized assets have the stamina to last over such a demanding track.

With a number of Cheltenham hopefuls expected to line up in this one, it could well be one of the most competitive races on Trials Day, with the betting odds from the bookies representing this already. Mick Channon-trained Mister Whitaker was last years winner.

Crest Trophy Chase (13:50)

The Crest Trophy Chase is a handicap race in which many are looking forward to, with jumping being key over the 2 mile and 5 furlong course. In what is a huge test for the horses involved, any runner performing well could well earn themselves another trip to Cheltenham in March.

Paul Nicholls’ Froden claimed victory in 2018, ridden by Bryony Frost. Meanwhile, those looking forward to this one should pencil in 13:50pm into their diaries.

Cotswold Chase (14:25)

The main event of the day for many comes in the Cotswold Chase, with former Cheltenham Gold Cup winner See More Business having won this race twice during his illustrious career.

One or two 2019 Gold Cup contenders could well be on show this time around too, hoping to take the crown from Definitely Red, who won for trainer Brian Ellison last year. The Cotswold Chase starts at 14:25pm.

Santini claimed another victory for trainer Nicky Henderson last year, snatching the win away from Black Op in the closing stages. The Classic Novices Hurdle starts at 15:00pm this year.
